The Island of the Sun
Cyprus is an island with strong greek traditions, but to most of us simply know it as a great hotspot, which has made it a very popular destination with tourists, with over 2.4 million visiting the island each year. The island receives over 330 days of sunshine a year, which has given it the name The Island of the Sun. With plenty of travel agents providing Cyprus holidays and low cost airlines including Monarch offering routes to Paphos and Larnaca, there has never been a better time to visit.
While attracting visitors from around the world, most of them tend to be Europeans. In recent years Russians and Poles have become poolside regulars alongside the French, Germans and, of course, us Brits.. The British Armed Forces have long has a presence in Cyprus. The UK retains a military base in order to have a gateway for forces to the Middle East. The impact of this on the surrounding area is that Cypriots have grown used to, and this has in turned resulted in areas that are less traditional and more contemporary in culture. From English being spoken everywhere you go, to driving on the left side of the road. A major attraction for many Brit tourists is that the island offers all of the comforts and familiarities of home, but we also get to bask in the sun.
For many reading this, the prospect of taking a holiday away from England only to be greeted at the airport by a hire car representative hailing from Croydon and being served an authentic Mediterranean dish of steak and chips will not appeal. However, this side of Cyprus, that continues to attract millions of tourists year after year, is only one aspect of the island and is concentrated around the tourist hotspots of Paphos, Larnaca and Ayia Napa. Fortunately as you venture off the beaten track, your are soon reminded of the character that has made this island a popular destination for millennia.
A trip well worth taking is into Cyprus largest mountain range, the Troodos Mountains. In the heart of the mountains you will find the Kykkos monastery, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1998. Housing art and exhibits on ancient Greece, the monastery has the twin function of being a museum for visitors and a practising monastery lived in by worshiping monks. Kykkos even has its own winery where the monks bottle and sell their wine. A daytrip to the Troodos Mountains can be a welcome change from the beach and with overnight accommodation available in many of the authentic villages dotted about; you might want to spend a few days here sampling another side of Cyprus.
Caribbean Cruise Packages
Given the air scare in the post 9/11 period, cruises are gradually becoming the most popular mode of traveling these days. And the cruise operators are busy making hay while the sun is shining. They are introducing new and lucrative Caribbean Cruise Packages to lure the cruising public. The best thing about these packages is that you have a host of activities packed into one package.
Be it a luxury package or an economy one, there are some offers which are included in both. For instance, meals and room service are the common features in both types of cruises. The only difference in this aspect is that in a luxury cruise, you will have the choice of gourmet cuisine at every meal and you have your own butler to tend to you.
Shore excursions and certain onboard social activities are included for both types of cruises. The luxury class passengers may enjoy the additional benefits of lavishly decorated suites with their own private balconies, well-stocked bars and state-of-the-art entertainment systems in their suites. They would have access to the multiplexes and discotheques, and are entitled to pickup and drop-off facilities to and fro from the embarkation and disembarkation points.
However, the budget itineraries usually do not pack exotic locales in their schedules. It is usually the luxury voyages that cater to the niche traveler, willing to venture into the unknown and the uncharted. During the lean season, these luxury liners offer heavy discounts on these same luxury packages. During this time, one can hope to save hundreds of dollars per person on these packages and enjoy the amenities of a luxury package. This policy to attract tourists is pursued by even the giant cruise operators, like the Royal Caribbean International and The Yachts of Seabourn.
The Caribbean Cruise Packages are winning favors from tourists all around the globe, and the cruise operators are leaving no stone unturned to lure them.

An Alaska Vacation - Try an Alaska Cruise
When dreaming about an Alaska vacation you may
envision the romantic essence of yourself reeling in King Salmon, roaming the Alaska wilderness shooting wildlife pictures or simply observing the awe-inspiring beauty…but there’s more.
Alaska still remains one of the last frontiers on our
planet. Its harsh extremely rugged environment can put any well-equipped adventurer to the test. Yet for the wise, you can engage in a thrilling Alaska vacation, experience the rugged Alaska environment, the awe-inspiring beauty and participate in Alaska’s beckoning adventurous surroundings as much or as little
as you want. And you can do it all from the safety of your home away from home!
Your Alaska vacation setting, your home away from home, is
aboard one of the most spectacular means of transportation known today, a luxury cruise ship. Granted, these cruise ships are monstrous in their own right, dwarfed by jutting mountain peaks and colossal glacier ice fields. Yet, you have the opportunity to experience some of Alaska’s finest, right from the luxury and comfort of your home away from home, a cruise ship. What a
romantic way to travel!
Advantages Of Living In The Northwest…
For those living in the Pacific Northwest, you have the ease and
advantage of experiencing a wondrous Alaska vacation by driving a vehicle to your departure port, either Seattle, Astoria
or Vancouver, B.C.; making your Alaska vacation that much more of a vacation.
You’ll experience the joys from NOT having to deal with the anxieties of a possible flight delay or flight cancellation and no additional strain on the pocket book requiring additional money for flights or possible hotel stays.
If you’re driving, the ideal is to find a friend or family
member to drop you off and pick you up. You do, however, have the option of parking at the Bell Street Garage located directly across from Pier 66, the cruise terminal in Seattle.
Fee: $12.00 per day.
On-line reservations are available through Republic Parking.
Location: 9 Wall Street. Enter at the corner of Alaskan Way and Wall Street.
25 handicap parking stalls.
No oversize or RV parking is available in the garage. Vehicles must be less than 6′6″ high.
Republic Parking operates the garage. Questions? Call the garage staff at (206) 783-4144.
The ability to leave home and drive to your cruise ship
is truly remarkable. We took that opportunity to engage in an Alaska vacation with Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) the summer of 2004. Previously we’d explored Alaska by air; vehicle, foot and most recently the favorable moment came, to explore Alaska by way of a cruise ship.
Past Vacations Were Work…
In the past, our Alaska vacation required an immense amount of
planning, organization, and ultimately, “work”, yielding very little time for some true relaxation and quality time with loved ones. An NCL Alaska Cruise allows you to truly relax and spend the necessary quality time with loved ones. The cruise gives you options. If you want to engage yourself into an intense schedule, you can. If you don’t want the intensity, that’s your option.
Cruising With NCL…
We elected to cruise with NCL for various reasons:
they’re very competitive in price, they offer “Free-Style Cruising”, they have fabulous children programs (we could spend some quality romantic time together while the kids were fully involved in the children programs), superb entertainment, an international crew and they were the first cruise line in Seattle. We had to check them out…and that we did!
Six of us, 2-adults and 4-children, set off to explore the
qualities of NCL on an Alaska vacation. Our vessel, the “Norwegian Spirit” was docked at the Port of Seattle, the Pier 66 Terminal. Our scheduled departure was a Saturday afternoon allowing us the relaxing time to get some last minute things together. We were in no rush whatsoever. We could arrive at the ship between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. How soothing this was to all the family members.
Arriving at the terminal was a little confusing; it appeared as if every passenger descended on the ship at the same time. Amongst the confusion we found a courteous NCL employee who directed us to the appropriate baggage check-in and ticketing lines. We were impressed how quickly and orderly the lines
flowed. NCL did a fantastic job of getting us through the baggage check-in, ticketing and on-board the ship.
Each passenger is issued an ID card before boarding.
This ID Card serves as your room key, boarding pass and credit card for any onboard shopping. It’s imperative that you guard it like your credit card, do not leave it unattended. You’ll need it in ALL ports of call for departing and boarding the ship.
Before the ship left the Seattle dock, on to our Alaska
vacation, we were exploring. The Spirit carries 1,996 passengers with a crew of 920. That’s nearly 1-crew member for every 2-passengers! And we have to say; the crew was there to serve us and make sure we had the absolute best Alaska vacation. We appreciated all of the nationalities represented on the Spirit. It’s truly a vessel of international flair.
Our kids, of course, loved the stern section of the ship,
the Kids Club. It’s amazing, an entire mini-amusement park with tunnels, tubes and balls, a pool with slides, fountains and a mock pirate ship yielding water-spouting cannons that make up the upper portion of the stern section. This is a kid’s heaven. When our kids were tired of the water games (that rarely
happened), the arcade was only steps away.
The restaurants on board were numerous from fine dining to
buffet style and fast food offered 24-hours a day. You’ll never go hungry. If you’re dieting to lose weight, put the diet on hold for the duration of the cruise. You’ll want the flexibility to enjoy all the fabulous food entrees.
The Many Options…
We especially enjoyed the many options of simply watching
whales spout, the beautiful scenery passing us by, picking up a movie in the theater, dining, playing cards, trying our luck in the casino, listening to some live entertainment at one of the many bars, lounging on the deck by one of the pools, pumping iron at the gym, shooting some hoops on the basketball court…the
list seems endless. This is the ultimate Alaska vacation; you can do it all, part or nothing.
Our family of six always had something to do, there was
never a dull boring moment. Each one of us had the option to choose what we wanted to do. My wife, for example, read a book in the library while I watched a movie in the theater, our oldest hung out with some new found friends and the other three played on the water slides. Our Alaska vacation was unlike any other,
there was literally no sacrificing the wants and likes of other family members. And above all, we didn’t have to drive to any of these recreational activities!
One of our favorite functions were the evenings live
high quality professional entertainment in the grand Moulin Rouge showroom. It’s unique in that the Moulin Rouge utilizes two decks, with theater style sitting. You ultimately get a great view from every seat, including the seats in the balcony! On our
particular cruise, the Cruise Director, Adrian Lewis, did a fabulous job organizing all of the professional entertainment. The picture depicts a special attribute to all the crew who made our Alaska vacation an unforgettable experience.
Ports of Call…
And of course, there are the ports of call: Ketchikan via the Inside Passage from Seattle, Juneau, Skagway and Prince Rupert with a sneak into the Sawyer Glacier. The ports are all awesome. You have the choice of departing the ship and venturing out into the Alaskan territory or stay in your second home, onboard the Spirit. It’s your choice to expand your Alaska
vacation to meet your adventurous needs and desires.
On shore you can experience nearly any level of excitement
you so desire. You’ll have at your disposal helicopter flights, fishing opportunities, river rafting, guided tours, shopping expeditions or simply strolling around on a self-guided walking tour. The ports of call, on our Alaska vacation, were relatively small. This enabled us to walk around the towns to capture the Alaskan lifestyle. Granted, our stay in each port was limited but it did yield enough time to get a taste, an experience of Alaska. The ports were showcased enabling us to see the highlights and if so desired we could return at a later date.
Ketchikan was our first port of call after cruising through the majestic Inside Passage. Ketchikan is a
shoppers dream, an added feature to experience the ultimate Alaska vacation. The historic downtown and specialty shops are within minutes from the cruise ship docks. You’ll find a wide selection of native art, jewelry, sporting goods and even the Alaskan themed toys.
We especially enjoyed walking around town, watching the
salmon run through a stream in the center of town and riding the
city bus to Saxman Village, a native village 2-miles south of Ketchikan. The village is literally a totem pole park revealing the native’s culture. Returning to the ship we decided to walk the 2-miles back along a fabulous waterside walkway that portrayed the beauty of this Southeast Alaska area.
Juneauwas the second port of call. We were amazed how much the city had changed over the past 10-years. The
cruise ship industry had a great effect on the coastal Alaskan towns. Shops literally sprung up overnight to accommodate the thousands of passengers descending upon Juneau and the other coastal towns.
Juneau is the capital of Alaska, nestled between
towering mountains. The enormity of the cruise ships makes for an awesome sight as they cruise between the mountain ridges.
Juneau is also home to the Mendenhall Glacier. This is a sight to be seen, especially if you’re not familiar with glaciers. We took the city bus to the Mendenhall Valley and walked about a mile to reach the glacier. Of course, there are other options to get to the glacier via helicopter or one of the many bus-guided tours.
If you plan on visiting the glacier bring along your
National Parks Pass. This will entitle you free entrance to the visitor’s center.
Our third Port of Call was the infamous little town of
Skagway. Our route to Skagway took us up the Tracy
Arm to the Sawyer Glacier. We cruised past icebergs and gushing water falls. The captain brought the cruise ship near the spectacular ice-flow, a sight you have to see. Our kids continued playing on the water-slides as we cruised along
the towering pieces of ice, truly an amazing sight.
Skagway welcomed us with open arms. It’s here that
the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898 began. It’s hard to imagine more than 30,000 gold seekers set out from this once tiny village. And now, Skagway is experiencing it’s second gold rush. Approximately 5- cruise ships visit Skagway every day during the months of May - September, that’s 10,000 visitors per day bringing money into the community!
The town is very easy to get around; it’s about 7-blocks
long all encased with specialty shops. The prices are extremely competitive yielding some good quality products. Regarding the tours, you can always sign up for a tour aboard the ship; however, if you didn’t make previous tour arrangements you still have ample opportunities on shore.
Skagway is known for the famous scenic railway. It’s a
3-hour ride out of Skagway following the gold rush route into the Yukon. We decided against the train ride and hopped aboard a personalized driving tour with the Skaguay Tour Company. We like the added edge a personalized tour gives. The tour consists of a historic city tour and a drive to the summit of White Pass, essentially paralleling the train route but only half the cost. We also had the opportunity to stop at various points of interest along the way, unlike the train. Before you go to Skagway check out Skagway Tour Company. Be sure to bring your passport, you’ll cross into Canada and may need the identification for re-entry into the U.S.
Our last Port of Call, before returning to Seattle, was
Prince Rupert. This cosmopolitan city encompasses
many cultures and is the home of the First Nations people for 10,000 years. Near the cruise dock is a native museum with a variety of shops nestled along the waterfront. Compared to the other ports, we found the various gift items expensive even with the good U.S. dollar exchange rate.
There are tours that you can participate in; however, we
took advantage of the walking tour along the waterfront visiting the sunken gardens. It made for a nice walkabout; however, our kids were anxious to return to the ship and engage in the many wonderful activities. That’s the beauty; you have a home away from home, a comfortable place to return to creating a relaxing and enjoyable Alaska vacation.
Seattle, our off-boarding port, came far too soon. None of us were very anxious to leave the ship; we were ready to do the cruise again, back to our Alaska vacation. But the reality, we had to disembark. NCL made this an extremely easy process.
Each passenger is given a color-coded baggage tag depending upon your on-shore schedule. For example, if you had a morning
flight scheduled out of SeaTac Airport, your color-coded baggage tag indicated early ship disembarkation. You’d simply listen to your color tag announced over the loudspeaker system and proceed to depart the ship.
NCL makes it a relaxing experience even when the ship has reached its final destination. You can sit
back, relax and continue to enjoy your Alaska vacation while eating breakfast looking out at Seattle’s skyline.
Foremost, the things we bring with us from any vacation is
the memories, the experiences. It, therefore, makes sense to have a memorable vacation. Unfortunately there is a cost to it, any vacation or anything we do in life will cost in some form, either money, time, material things, etc. A cruise costs money. If money is a concern to you then we can show you how to save money before you purchase your cruise tickets.
The Alaska cruises book-up quickly. We encourage you to get the most of your Alaska vacation by booking early. You will not be disappointed. And we’ll help you through the booking process, your memories are a keepsake; therefore, book early.
We do not sell cruise tickets, airline tickets or any travel tickets, we simply reveal the Facts so you can make an informed decision and get the most for your hard earned dollar.
Step out into the exciting, adventurous, and romantic wonderlands our planet has to offer…make your Alaska vacation an Alaska Cruise.

Atopic Dermatitis and Flaxseed Oil

Tech + More
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic disease that targets the skin. It is most commonly known as eczema or atopic eczema. “Dermatitis” literally means an inflammation of the skin. Atopic dermatitis is usually found in patients who have an “atopic tendency”. These only mean that they have a high risk of acquiring atopic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, hay fever and asthma because they have inherited it from their parents or other family members.
Atopic dermatitis is not contagious, meaning the disease cannot be spread from one person to another. It is not known how the disease is spread but doctors are currently looking at hereditary and environmental reasons.
Atopic dermatitis is also a malfunction of a body’s immune system when there is an absence of a protein called cytokine and high amount of other cytokines which will result to inflammation of the skin.
Atopic dermatitis causes one’s skin to become unbearably itchy. Scratching will lead to swelling (inflammation), cracking and crusting. The most common symptoms are dry and itchy skin resulting in rashes on the face, hands, feet and other joints. These symptoms appear mostly on children and their conditions will improve or disappear as they grow older. Sometimes, though, it will not improve or their condition will have sudden flares. Sometimes it will develop to asthma or hay fever.
Accurate diagnosis of atopic dermatitis is not that easy. The doctor will probably ask if a parent or any other family member has acquired the disease before (or even hay fever and asthma). They will also ask if the patient has been exposed to possible irritants such as smoke, dust or even soaps and detergents. However, there is no current test that can really know if someone is afflicted with atopic dermatitis. The doctor will have to see the patient several times to monitor and rule out other diseases.
Once diagnosis have been done, treatment of atopic dermatitis might be done in months or for cases where the disease started in childhood, even years. Treatment requires reducing one’s exposure to irritants. These include having to avoid certain places such as the beach or smoky areas in general.
Another possible treatment is regular application of moisturizers to skin and probable use of topical steroids to ease on itchiness brought on by the disease. These should be done with utmost care as they can provide more allergic reaction to a patient’s skin.
Other doctors have also found flaxseed oil to be important in curing atopic dermatitis.
Flaxseed oil is found in a slender plant called flax plant (Linum usitatissimum) which has a history of healing wonders. Flaxseed oil is derived by pressing flaxseeds to produce therapeutic oil that is rich in EFA (essential fatty acids). EFA are valuable because the body needs them to function but cannot manufacture them on their own. One EFA found in flaxseed oil is omega-3 fatty acid which helps in reducing the risk of heart disease and other diseases.
Flaxseed oil also possesses EFA that gives it its skin-healing power. Red and itchy patches of skin resulting from atopic dermatitis often respond to EFA from flaxseed oil. These EFA have anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing actions which will help a patient recover from atopic dermatitis or at least provide relief from its itchiness.

What is REALLY Involved in Running a Home Business
Saturday August 23rd 2008, 9:54 pm

Tech + More
Contrary to popular belief nothing is as simple as buying a magic e-book or joining the latest network marketing craze, to suddenly owning a healthy low maintenance online business. It just doesn’t happen.
It a nut shell, it takes LOTS of time, money, effort, dedication and a lot of skill and planning. If you are looking for a quick $25 fix, then I am afraid that I simply can’t help you. Oh, I forgot that the most important skill of all is juggling.
That’s right, juggling. You need to prepare yourself for the long haul. My first online business, took nearly 6 months before it even covered my startup costs (business name, legal fees, bank accounts, web hosting etc.) So I needed some way to eat, sleep and be happy for 6 months while building this business. I chose to continue with my day job and put away as much money as I could to live on for the following 6 months, when I would take the switch from running the “home based business” while I was still actually working full time, to spending the following 6 months dedicated to growing my own business. I needed cash in the bank to do this.
I’d wake at 6:00am and respond to emails and process my online orders. I’d leave home at 8:00am to arrive at work by 9:00am. I had a special relationship with our international courier to pickup deliveries from our garage (without being present personally.) Fortunately I was able to use my ISP’s web mail facility from my “day desk” to response to my personal clients during the day. It was great. I could respond to my personal customers quickly, answer questions and let them know their orders had been received and would be processed later that day. And I mean, speak with them personally by email. Auto-Responders are great, but they always look like an auto-responder. In exchange for this fringe benefit from my employer, I gave up my lunch break and offered to be available by telephone for emergency after hours support (I worked in IT if you hadn’t guessed.) When I arrived home at 6:00pm, I’d spend usually another hour processing orders received during the day, have dinner, watch the nightly news, have a quick 30min bike ride if possible, and slip into bed around 10pm after doing some web page marketing.
I had designed a system that allowed be to slowly build an online business, while saving money to make the jump to full time, self employed, work at home. Which inevitable comes with an initial salary sacrifice. Something like 3 out of every 4 small business’s fail. It is simply because they have large startup over heads, with little or no immediate income. You don’t need an accounting degree to work out if your expenses are larger than your net income, the business is not in good shape. Hence, so many people end up closing their small business and going back to their “day job.” I was determined that this would NOT happen to me.
There was lots to learn, and learn fast. Accounting, advertising, marketing, business practices, web page design, web page optimization, web page promotion, email marketing, web page statistics….. the list goes on. Oh, and customer relations. So many articles I see focus so much on meta tags, keywords etc, not paying much attention to the customers, and people actually looking at your web page.
I dabbled for months, years probably, in optimizing my web pages, using submission software, swapping web page links. NOTHING has worked better than following up with my customers, offering affiliate and referral commissions, providing an online post-sales customer followup / satisfaction survey. I’ve since noticed customers of mine writing nice reviews about their experience with us on industry forums, I can track the click throughs from these reviews and they do generate sales for us. The best advertising is simply the advertising that works, not necessarily that is the most expensive. From this I can see more and more incoming web page links and I haven’t even needed to ask for them!
I try to update or add content to our web page EVERY DAY. I spend at least 1 hour every morning improving the content, changing the content, looking at ways to stream line the HTML code, checking what our competition is doing, looking for the latest innovations in our industry. This constant tinkering with my web page seemed to interest search engine spiders like Google to return more often. I’d see google crawlers in my site stats maybe 1-2 times a month, its not nearly 100 times a month. So changes to my web page are quickly indexed.
Another misconception with home businesses is that they run themselves. This might be the case for electronic products, such as e-books and web templates that don’t involved actual product handling. But this market is saturated beyond comprehension, and from my understanding, charge backs from credit card providers are rampant as customers aren’t happy with their purchase and demand refunds.
In order to convince a real person to order from your online business, they must be convinced that you are, in fact, also a real person. You need to speak with them. This can be via content on your web page, PERSONALIZED email replies (e.g. Dear John or Dear Mary, not Dear Client or Dear Customer.) Your need to answer their emails fully, honestly, promptly and also follow up on your emails. If a customer on Monday asks you to confirm a price, availability and TOTAL order cost. Email the information ASAP, address the customer by name, and sign the email with your name. If you don’t hear back from the customer, follow-up with THEM (don’t forget to print this policy in your online privacy policy to keep everybody happy.) Who knows, if you don’t follow up with the potential client, they could already have their wallet open, credit card out, and ordering from your biggest competitor. Best you get back to them before somebody else does. And it will happen! I started this policy after the exact same thing happened to me. I learn quickly and make sure that I will never lose a sale to a competitor again by not following up with EVERY potential customer.
SPEED is also important. You need to respond to emails ASAP. If you consider that most people still access the internet by dial up modem, they login the internet, do a bit of web surfing, send some emails and then logoff. Their home computer is switched off, and may not be turned on again sometimes for days. So if you take a day to respond to emails, there is every likely hood that your potential client may not actually receive your response for some time - maybe a week. The best way to grab this potential client’s attention is to response to their email IMMEDIATELY. They will receive your reply during their same internet session. It also sets their expectation on your high service levels and responsiveness. Answering their first question, which must be “how good is this company anyway” and “do I trust them with my money?”
Hmmm, so I have to sit at my computer 24 hours a day and respond to emails? Doesn’t sound like much of an existence does it? Sadly, I admit I went through a period actually doing this. About 1 or 2 months I think. Yes, I am sad I know. This was the largest recordable growth period for my first online business. Then I learnt about Outlook mail rules (I actually knew about them all along, I just hadn’t thought to use them!) I could setup Microsoft Outlook to screen my emails looking for orders from my web page, send them to a specific folder, and then play a sound file when an order or customer question arrived from my web page. Now, at last, I was finally free from the computer and home office, just listening out for my incoming order / customer question sound. Actually, it became a motivation factor. My wife and I picked some of the sound clips from Comedy Central Inc, which make receiving an order even more fun (yes I know, simple things.) But it is good to know when I hear “I’ve got mail” sung by Special Ed, we’ve got an order.
Basically, you need to build a strong loyalty with your customers. You can do this by responding to them fast, giving them accurate information, and delivering their products fast. You need to spell out explicitly why they should buy your widget and chose your company, over the 1,000 other similar firms. To start a successful home business, you need to prepare for an initial dry spell. Remember, nothing just happens over night.
You need to pick a product or niche market. You need to make yourself known as an expert in this field, you need to get your name out there and you need to convince potential customers to become real customers. This all involves the evil W-word; WORK.
Now without sound too like a cliché, we own our own house, work about 2 hours a day (early morning) have a little boy crawling around, another on the way, and building a brand new dream house for ourselves - all with cash without any bank loans, fees, guarantees or interest. We didn’t get here by paying $25 for a “guaranteed successful online business design” that simply involved selling $25 “guaranteed successful online business designs.” We have daily regular and scheduled collections from our local and international couriers, and if we aren’t home, we leave them at the front door. So the rest of the day, is all free time now.

Relocation and the Currency Market

As we all know, there are many important areas to be considered in the process of relocating. From the physical removal of household goods, to settling children into new schools, there seem to be an endless number of items to check off on a relocation ‘to-do’ list. Yet as a currency specialist we continually find that the all important purchase of the employees local currency is often overlooked.
Whether transferring a lump sum to purchase an over seas property, or simply forwarding a US Dollar salary abroad every month, we have experienced that general corporate practice is to stay somewhat removed from this aspect of an international assignment or permanent move. Simply allowing employees to blindly use their banks to make their own decision on how they are going to move their Dollars abroad, however, can be a costly mistake!
Volatility in the currency markets is an undeniable and unavoidable daily occurrence. With a daily turnover in excess of $1.5 billion and an uncountable number of factors playing into which way the market will move, it is impossible to forecast currencies with 100% accuracy. While large corporations employ market professionals to manage billions of dollars worth of currency risk, private individuals are often left at the whim of this massive market feeling uneducated and at risk.
So why should this be a concern?
If you imagine yourself in the shoes of an international employee, it is quite simple to see how the currency market and exchange rates directly affect your life: While your employer is, for example, a US based company; you will more than likely receive your salary in US Dollars (USD). This income may be deposited into your US account every month or possibly into an international account that has been set up in your new country. Either way, you will usually need to exchange your USD income into the local currency in order to buy groceries, pay bills and maintain a standard of living.
The process of using your bank can be frustrating and may also be expensive. Think of it this way; every month you will need to contact your bank in order to initiate the exchange from your USD account into your local account. You will more than likely speak with a different person every time you call and you will most definitely receive a different exchange rate every month. On top of all that your bank will charge you a wire transfer fee ranging from $15-$30 per transaction. While the cost of wiring these funds on a regular basis will certainly add up over time, the inherent risk you face not knowing what rate you will receive in the future is MUCH more concerning.
To illustrate let us assume that you were transferring USD$5,000 in wages to Canada on a monthly basis. In May of 2005, your USD$5,000 would have converted into roughly CAD$6,350 at a rate of 1.27. By February of 2006, that same USD$5,000 would have purchased you just CAD$5,700, a difference of CAD$650 every month. Assuming that you were using your bank, you would have also been receiving a wire transfer fee for each transaction totaling somewhere around $300-$400 in bank charges alone.
The solution is simple; if you want to protect against currency risk, receive better rates of exchange and avoid needless fees, don’t use your bank! Most private individuals in this situation do not realize there is alternative to their bank, but using a currency specialist like HIFX can in fact remove the stress and hassle of these such requirements all together. HIFX’s Private Client Services include the securing exchange rates for up to 24 months, the setting up of direct debits which will avoid all transfer and bank receipt charges, and a simple, friendly service that is designed to put clients at ease.
Whether your employees need to make regular transfers abroad or are moving larger sums of money for their international purchases, it is worth knowing that you can point them in the direction of a world renowned currency specialist which completely understands the relocation process.

Big Brands Get Ready to Command Gaming Laptops Sector Too

Are you able to remember the time when gaming laptops were not so obtainable? They were simply like a small qty production plant. Didn’t sell a huge amount but generated a lot of profit on each one. Despite that everyone probably wanted one. In my point of view they were the best laptops available. I reckon they would give us a preview of what’s to come but nobody would seriously buy laptops for gaming back then. As greater established manufacturers see the profits in the gaming notebook sector, things looks to have altered.
Just think about how much profit these manufacturers could be making especially when using mass production. With such thin margins on other notebooks its not a surprise they would like to be included here. Local system builders are unable compete with them in convincing potential buyers to buy laptops. I suppose littler manufacturers are extremely perturbed about this. Clearly what I see taking place here is that the larger brands dropping prices in the beginning to get rid of the competition from littler retailers. Smaller system builders cannot really use a brand name like the larger manufacturers can.
The laptops being launched by brand name manufacturers are all competing for the best laptop status. Still however, for the small time resellers this may turn out to be good. Selecting the spec is something all us techies like. Usually lots of comparisons of the tech specs will be carried out and the tech savvy can judge what the better laptop really is. For this kind of niche, the tech specs are typically more valued rather than the appearance.
This is great news from a customers view. The competition between the tier 1 players should force prices down when they seek to differentiate themselves. Its hard to say what will take place really as the market is a fast changing one. Mobile technology is always getting better and the latest stuff should typically be high priced on release. Increased competition traditionally provides improved technology at cheaper prices so the times ahead should be great.
Can Certain Chemical Moisturisers Cause Tumours?
In a recent investigation, four non-organic moisturisers, commonly used in America, have been seen to up skin cancers in the mice they were tested on. The study was headed by Allan Conney, director of the Susan Lehman Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research and professor in the school of pharmacy at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. The test used the moisturisers; Dermabase, Dermovan (a wholesale-only product which was discontinued in 2006), Eucerin Original Moisturising Cream, and Vanicream. The moisturisers were frequently applied to tester mice with sun-related skin cancer. Allan Conney said that this resulted in faster growing tumors and an increase in the tumors. “This was unexpected. We really did not expect to see the tumor-promoting activity of these creams,” Conney said. Conney and colleagues were eventually intending to use one of these moisturisers, in clinical trials on humans with topical caffeine, which has prevented skin cancer in animal studies. These results are worrying; if these moisturisers affect mice in this way, then they are possibly also detrimental to humans. “This study could definitely be a warning to alert these companies to consider testing moisturizing creams with some sort of assay,” said dermatologist Keyvan Nouri, director of dermatologic surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and author of the ‘Skin Cancer’. He agrees that the companies that make the moisturisers should run further tests on their products. Moisturisers are not required to take the same safety tests as medicinal drugs as they are classified as cosmetics. However the results of this test demand the moisturisers to be re-examined, whilst the moisturisers did not cause cancer in the mice they did increase it’s growth. There is a possibility that the intense radiation damaged the skin of the mice before the moisturizing creams were applied, and this may account for the unusual tumor growth after application. However, cases of skin cancer have increased amongst humans. Skin cancers account for more than half of all cancers. Conney’s research team asked Johnson and Johnson to make them a “custom blend” moisturiser which excluded two ingredients previously linked to skin irritation (sodium lauryl sulfate) and tumor promotion (mineral oil). This moisturiser did not promote skin cancer, yet not all of the products tested used the two excluded ingredients, a problem lies in determining exactly what the link with skin cancer is, also we must take into consideration that mouse and human skin are very different. It is important not to instantly condemn moisturisers, as Keyvan Nouri says, they can be very beneficial, “As we get older, our skin gets drier. We need to moisturise, otherwise our skin gets dry and we get eczema, dermatitis, rashes, and so on. It is too soon to say from this study people should stop moisturising.” Whether these findings should cause avid moisturiser users concern is not yet clear, however if you want to be on the safe side Scinbutique has a great range of natural and organic moisturisers which you can use worry free!
