Horse Training For Napping Horses

If you ever rode a horse that would stop and refuse to go forward then you would know how absolutely annoying it is.

Why do they stop? Because that’s their reaction to a worrisome or unpleasant situation. Even nervous and timid horses can stake themselves to the ground because they are apprehensive about leaving the herd or the barn.

What other reasons are there for napping? One is the horse simply doesn’t know what to do. They’d rather stop and stand than move forward. If your horse naps in a place he’s familiar with (ie. your home area) then you should check your tack for things like a bad fitting saddle. The pain could finally become unbearable and the horse simply won’t move.

Often, horses will react to bad fitting tack by rearing or bucking. So when tack is bad fitting, napping is a pretty good alternative compared to rearing or bucking.

Another place a horse may nap is riding around an unfamiliar area. If he naps during this then it’s likely he’s doing it out of fear. The same can be true if he sees unfamiliar objects.

A secret tip about nappers is to closely observe where they’re napping. If you find they get nappy around certain things then you might spot a pattern. For instance, every time your horse rides by a hay tarp and he stops then that is likely your culprit. But it could be lots of different things. It could be bushes. Trees. Dog pens. Etc.

When trying to solve napping from fear, you should take the approach when working with a spooking horse. A horse that spooks needs to be treated kindly. He shouldn’t be forced into stepping over his “fear boundary”. You have to talk to them, pet them, and be patient.

It just so happens that this is one of the easiest and most effective ways to solve the napping problem. The tradeoff is that it also takes the most time. But so what? Horse training is about patience.

So what do you do? Simply sit in the saddle. You’ll want to give your horse enough rein to stretch his neck but don’t give him so much that he can graze. Then you simply sit there until he decides to move forward. Don’t let him go left or right. Don’t let him back up or turn around and head home. Don’t kick him. Don’t yell at him.

You are telling your horse it’s okay to stand still but he doesn’t get to anything but stand there or move forward.

At some point the horse should move forward. When he does, give him plenty of reward.

The results from waiting for your horse to move forward are far better with patience and kindness than trying to force your horse to move. Sure, it may take a l-o-n-g time for him to move but he’ll eventually feel safe enough to do it - or he may get bored just standing there - and you should know that boredom and feeling safe are almost the exact same thing in the horse’s mind.

Next time you take your horse out and he naps it may take half the time for him to move. Then the next time it may only take a few minutes. It’s kind of like the old rule of training. The more you work on it the lesser time it takes.

What do you do while you’re patiently waiting for your horse to move? If you’re with friends then warn them before hand this may happen. You may have to sit there and have a conversation. If you’re by yourself bring a crossword puzzle or even a book. Do what it takes for you to pass the time and not get impatient.

Just remember to treat it like you would a horse that’s spooking. Most of the time, napping is a reaction to spooking. You simply have to be patient and wait it out.

Invista Sells Two More Office Properties

Filed under: Business Opps, Management Info, World of Design

Money raised by the two sales decreases the loan of the trust to a ratio of forty percent, producing holdings worth over £80m

The exchange of contracts has also been completed to dispose of the National Magazine House. This is a residential and office building in Soho, London and with a value of £30m; it is a decrease of over six percent on the December valuation. There are many other such office spaces available, the recession meaning lower rental costs and more businesses turning to renting office space. The use of companies offering workplace analysis and office fitout and refurbishment services are also in demand at such times.

Depending on this years rent review, the value of the building could increase by another £2m. It is currently let out to the National Magazine Company for a further ten years.

Contracts were also exchanged to sell a building in Brighton for office businesses and residential use. These premises are currently let out to the Royal Bank of Scotland on a twelve year contract for three and a half million pounds at a yield of almost six percent.

When the completion has gone through, the sale will mean an increase in price over its December valuation of 25% of about £3m.

The trust has also said that the BBC has signed the rental agreement on Reynards Business Park in London for an annual rent of £700k for a further four years. That is an increase of 10% over the previous rental.

The rent of Cineworld’s Galaxy complex in Luton has also increased by forty percent to £450k per year.

The current number of deals means that the trust now has a portfolio of sixty-two properties with a total value of over three-hundred million, an annual rental income of £25m and a yield of 7 percent.

Time To Get Out Of Dodge? - Relocate Ahead Of The Collapse
Sunday March 29th 2009, 5:32 pm

Peak Oil? Economic Collapse? Maybe the universe is trying to tell you something. Maybe it’s Relocation, Relocation, Relocation.

With many people predicting a serious economic depression, and others equally–or also–concerned about the approaching depletion of oil production (”Peak Oil” - For full information, see Dry Dipstick at www.drydipstick.com), you might consider moving to a quieter, more sustainable, less oil-dependent location.

Of course you might be fine living exactly where you are now. It’s certainly easier to stay where you are than to move. No one can predict, certainly not with certainty, where the best places might be to deal with the future. Many observers think that large cities are definitely not the best location. Others suggest that any town dependent on water and food that comes from a large distance may not be ideal. They suggest a small town with adequate water and nearby farms. When it comes down to it, no one really has the foggiest idea, so you’re on your own.

If you wish, you can run off into the hills, create a mountain fortress, and be a dyed-in-the-wool, nobody-come-near-me loner. Others believe that if a true survivalist is someone who wants to survive, the best way to do that in the 21st century is in a community. (If you’re really into survivalism, we suggest you check out www.survivalist.com.)

The choice is yours. If you still have the time, we can suggest resources for finding a place to live both in the United States and in countries around the world.

Inside the United States

If you currently live in the United States, you might want to consider simply moving to another state rather than going abroad. Things generally get much cheaper when you move away from the coasts, and the quality of life can be very good. Plus, they speak English there (more or less) and you can usually get all the stuff you’re probably used to. (Assuming stuff is still available.)

There are a number of excellent web sites to help you in your search for a place to move to. Moving.com’s (www.moving.com) city profiles provide information on hundreds of cities. The profiles include cost of living, taxes, home costs, insurance costs and quality of life factors such as population, crime, weather and education.

Moving.com can also help you find real estate and arrange for moving logistics. You can even compare the profiles of two cities of your choice.

BestPlaces (www.bestplaces.net) lets you compare two cities from a list of over 3,000 places in the U.S. You’ll see a comparison of nearly 100 categories. BestPlaces offers neighborhood profiles for every zip code in the U.S., in-depth profiles on over 85,000 schools, a cost of living calculator that compares cities and determines what salary you’d need at a new location to maintain the same standard of living as you have now. Plus you’ll find crime rates for over 2,500 U.S. cities, most and least stressful cities, and climate profiles for 2,000 cities worldwide.

You can even take a “Find Your Best Place” quiz to determine your own recommended best places to live. BestPlaces also publishes the book “Cities Ranked and Rated”, with detailed information on over 400 metropolitan areas in the U.S. and Canada. You might also find the Most Livable Communities website helpful (www.mostlivable.org/).

Our favorite resource is FindYourSpot (www.findyourspot.com). It offers a fun quiz (it’ll take you less than 10 minutes) with great questions, and it produces a list of two dozen cities that fit your quiz answers. Results for each city include an attractive downloadable four-page report with an insightful overview of the character of the area and information on climate, arts and culture, recreation, education, housing and cost of living, crime and safety, health care, and earning a living. You’ll also find links to currently available jobs and housing, roommate services, recommended city-specific books, and travel deals if you’d like to personally visit the city.

Outside the U.S.

Wondering where the best country is to move to? We suggest that there is actually more than one “best country” for you. You find them by:

1) visiting every possible country and seeing which ones you like best, or

2) researching every possible country, zeroing in on those you feel most attracted to, and then visiting those countries. We suggest that the best way to begin is to use the Web, particularly the sites we list below.

Bottom line? Visit a country and spend some time there before making the actual move. Most experienced expatriates suggest living at least six months in your host country before permanently moving there. And remember, you’re not going to live in an entire country, just in one specific place in a country. You don’t have to love the entire country to be able to find that one special place just for you. You’re looking for a region, a city, a town, even a neighborhood where you can find the qualities you want in a new home.

Here are some websites that should help in your quest for a new country.

Boomers Abroad (www.boomersabroad.com)

A website devoted to giving you the best and most comprehensive information available on the Web about beautiful (and affordable) warm coastal countries, how to get there and how to live there. Whether you’re looking to be a retiree, a working expatriate, or simply a visitor, Boomers Abroad is your place on the Web for Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and Uruguay.

Expat Communities (www.expatcommunities.com)

A directory of more than 110 countries with sizeable English-speaking (and usually international as well) expatriate communities. English-language websites, organizations, online forums, meetups, local newspapers, and books of interest to current and potential expatriates. These websites will give you, or link you to, all the information you’ll need to decide if a particular country might suit your needs and deserves future exploration.

Expat Stuff (www.expatstuff.com)

Wherever you end up living as an expat, you’ll need stuff. And information. And services. This website is an excellent directory with a focus on the endless variety of information, services and tools you’ll need to enjoy life and create your own income while living abroad. You’ll also find information on such things as communication, health insurance, obtaining a passport, links to country information, and general expatriate blogs and websites.

So you want to sell DVDs on Ebay..?
Saturday March 28th 2009, 12:40 pm

Want to sell DVDs on Ebay? A lot of people do. Its a competitive market to say the least, but how do they do it - where do they get their stock from? Drop-shipping? Wholesale outlets? Possibly, if you have a spare lockup to store all the bulk purchased DVDs you just bought to get that extra discount. Chances are if you are considering buying to sell on Ebay you have looked into buying wholesaler lists from Ebay itself. Well, If I was you I would not waste my money. In my experience these lists are nothing but junk, containing at best outdated information for wholesalers in the US, with nothing relevant to the UK. There are many, many other ways to purchase DVDs to sell on Ebay - by all means follow the wholesaler route. There are wholesale outlets out there that cater for the Sole Trader, without having to be VAT registered but you usually find that the prices offered are not that much better, if at all, than the prices offered by the larger more reputable stores on the internet. So with that in mind, where should you start…? Well you really need to bear in mind 2 things.

1. People that buy on ebay are looking for a bargain, the trouble is they think that Ebay is the best place to look. They are wrong!

2. The higher the RRP the more bang for your buck.

When people first start selling DVDs on Ebay, they quickly find that the profit margins are slim to non-existent, but they usually have a plan: so what, they think, if they only make £1.00 for every DVD sold - sell a hundred DVDs in a month and before they know it that’s £100 profit. Fair enough if you are prepared to put in the work. But you will quickly find that of those 100 DVDs you sell in a month, a fairly high percentage of them will make even less than £1.00 profit, some will just break even and some will incur a loss. That’s just the way Ebay is designed: with the consumer in mind (if you have never sold on Ebay before you have to remember that that you are charged a fee when you list your items, charged again when the item sells and charged yet again when the buyer uses paypal for pay for it..!). The promotion of the “Watch this item” option on Ebay has been a boon for the customer but a bane for many a seller, whereas in the early days to watch an Item the customer had to place a bid, now it is very apparent that items can be added to a customers watch list the day you upload your listing and they do not have to place a bid until the auction closes, which can make for a last minute bidding frenzy and lower final values! So what is the best way round this? For the most part steer clear of the latest Region 2 blockbusters. There is too much competition for those, but if you can find a good source for Box-sets, Limited Editions, Deleted DVDs or Imported DVDs you will be onto a winner. These items will tend to fetch more money because of their perceived higher value or rareness of the DVD. But where should you buy them from? That is the 6 Million Dollar Question, but here are a few recommendations.

1. Price comparison Sites.

There are many price comparison sites on the internet, search for these in google, identify your favourite, enter your keywords and search for your DVDs. Some of them offer a list of the the best bargains currently available, sorted by either percentage or value discount across the majority of the big name retailers on the net. Yet more will allow you to target a specific DVD: enter your email address and select a target price. When the DVD reaches that price you will automatically be sent an email informing you where to purchase the DVD. Advantages of this are obvious since it will save you a lot of time an effort hunting down the bargain yourself.

2. Community Forums.

These sites can be worth their weight in Gold. Specialist Bargain hunter forums run by people just like you and populated with members just like you - all devoted to finding the latest and best bargains on the internet, whether they be legitimate sale discounts or the more sort after and flirtatious Mis-Price (these occur when the an on-line store messes up and lists a high value DVD for a 95% discount or something similar - it happens and if your quick off the mark, you might be able to get an order dispatched before the retailer rectifies the mistake). As well as the Bargain sections of these forums many also have a classified section, which brings us onto….

3 Second Hand. This is really a good market. I know I said earlier to steer clear of the latest blockbusters, but some of the forum sites have a very good classified section populated by people who purchase all the latest DVDs from all regions then sell them on when they are finished watching them for a discounted price. It is in forums sections such as this that you may find your ebay rarities and deleted limited editions being offered for sale at very discounted prices, possibly because the seller does not realise the true value of what he is offering.

4. Ex Rental.

Sometimes DVDs are released only for rental, with the sell thru DVD delayed for a couple of months. These DVDs can sometimes be picked up from the ex-Rental bin of your local DVD shop, usually for a very palatable price. List on Ebay as RARE, Not available in shops or some other sensational tag line and the DVD will probably sell for a good price. (But make sure you let the customer know that the Item is not new)

These are just a few ways for you to get hold of your DVDs at the best possible prices. I hope you find them useful and I wish you the best of luck with your Ebay endeavours.

New York Bassing
Monday March 23rd 2009, 8:45 pm
Filed under: Weblogs, World of Fishing

Woke up one beautiful summer morning with the strong urge to go fishing. Imagine that? I turned on the weather channel & sat back to watch the day’s forecast. The wind was at 1 mph. and the temperature was slowly rising. I was very excited once I saw optimal bass fishing conditions & called my friend Vinny. He answered with a groggy voice & as I explained the weather he slowly came to life & a sound crackled from his mouth. “aahwegoin’?” To which I replied “WHAT??” He then cleared his throat with a rumble & said “are we going?” Yep, be ready in 15 I said. On the way there we did our usual teasing & putting down each other’s angling tactics (which is the norm) & we then decided to settle this battle with a lunch bet.

We both agreed. As we launched the boat we made up some really tasty sounding sandwiches that we would make the other pay for as part of the agreement for losing. We chatted about lobster heroes all the way to caviar soup. Mmm Mmm Good! We finally reached a shoreline that produced some really nice fish in the past. We were using plastic worms with an eighth of an ounce bullet head & a sluggo hook since it holds the worm on a lot longer & prevents it from sliding down the hook when smaller fish tug at the worm’s tail. I casted in the worm a few times to loosen the line on the spool & untwist any potential kinks that may have formed on the line from the previous trip. While focusing on the spool with the bail open I noticed my line pull slightly from my fingers in a short jerk. I figured it was a little sunny or crappie & just left it as I uncoiled more line to a desired casting length which would reach the shore line under the over hanging trees with the skipping of my worm. I closed the bail manually & checked the weight to see if a fish had taken my offering. As I raised it, I saw another fast barrage of nibbles & set the fishing hook. ZZZING!! Nothing. I pulled the hook so hard I jerked our little 12′ Jon boat & almost capsized it. Vinny yelled “Hey, trying
to flip us??” We laughed it off.

Who’s Looking Out For Your Boat When Your Not There?
Wednesday March 18th 2009, 12:06 pm

Over 72 million Americans participated in recreational boating in 2003 on the estimated 17 million recreational boats in the United States. For many Americans, the investment in their vessel ranks along with their homes and automobiles. However, unlike homes and automobiles, most boat owners only spend a fraction of their time on their vessel which creates a few areas of serious concern; burglary and damage reporting.

Burglary and vandalism are crimes of opportunity. Criminals know that boats are frequently left unattended for long periods of time, making them an easy target for burglary and vandalism. Imagine showing up at your boat on a beautiful Saturday morning looking forward to a great day on the water only to find out that all the possession you stored on your vessel were stolen or that your boat has been seriously damaged, criminally or otherwise. That beautiful day just turned ugly very quickly. This is when you realize that, unlike your home or car, your boat is quite vulnerable without you there to protect it.

Crime prevention is a national crisis for boat owners all across the United States. What can boat owners do to alleviate this problem? A neighborhood watch style program would be a great start - fellow boat owners could then practice techniques for observing and reporting malicious activity. Unlike a neighborhood watch program though, concerned citizens can’t just knock on your boat door to inform you of theft or stolen property from your vessel. They can report it to local law enforcement, but there are some unique challenges with that:

Can local law enforcement get in contact with you?

If your vessel is registered, the local authorities will have access to your address, however, boat owners do not submit a phone number when registering their vessels. Herein lies the problem: law enforcement can only contact you in person or by mail and if you are not at your registered address or if that address is far away from you vessel, it could take days or weeks for you to be reached.

If a fellow boater noticed damage or suspicious activity on or around your vessel, would you find out?

Many boaters will make the good will gesture of reporting suspicious activity or criminal damage to local law enforcement; however, this leaves you back at square one when it comes to getting that information to you in a timely fashion. If a fellow boater notices damage or activity they do not perceive as criminal, there is virtually no chance that information will be passed on to you. People will call the police to report criminal activity but seldom report an incident otherwise.

What can be done about these issues?

There is an organization offering a service that addresses these issues for boat owners across America. Boat Watch USA has developed a National Boat Registry where boat owners provide (1) information about their vessel; (2) contact address and phone number, and (3) how and when to contact them. Boat Watch USA is a private, third-party intermediary for boat owners, and the personal information they keep for owner’s is not publicly accessible. When law agencies and concerned citizens want to report damage and criminal activity; they (1) call a toll-free hotline and, (2) report the incident using the unique vessel ID number. Both the hotline and vessel ID # are located on the Boat Watch USA decal the vessel owner affixes to their boat. Then, when an incident is reported, Boat Watch USA matches the vessel ID number to the contact person and reports the incident according to the owners preset directions.

Boat Watch USA has also developed neighborhood watch style program called “Boat Watch.” This is a public awareness campaign to educate vessel owners on crime awareness and the Boat Watch USA reporting methods. Boat Watch USA is also working to certify “Boat Watch USA Authorized” marinas and storage facilities that comply with the “Boat Watch” program.

Health Concerns for Goldfish
Wednesday March 11th 2009, 4:03 pm

If you are keen on breeding Goldfish, you should know that it’s not an easy task. It will take a lot of patience, a lot of space in the tank and quite a bit of money too. Don’t get into breeding if you think it’s going to be profitable, because it isn’t! Breeding goldfish is best left to a professional but if you still want to breed them, here’s how to begin:

Decide on the breed: You also must decide before hand what variety of goldfish you want to breed. Ideally, if you are a beginner you should decide on breeding a good quality single tail type fish like the comet.

Pair and choose the breeds: You must choose high quality goldfish to breed high quality goldfish. The goldfish you choose should be two-four years. A good quality goldfish would be assessed according to its finnage, body shape, size and color. They should be at least 4-6 inches or larger and very healthy. It’s better to breed with younger fish as the older ones might produce eggs that are deformed and infertile.

* The ideal female goldfish would be heavy at the rear, protruding on the left part of her body and her anal area would be soft.

* The ideal male goldfish would be a great chaser and there should be signs of his breeding tubercles on his gills and pectoral fins.
Begin with two females and three males. The idea is to have two males for every female.

Time to breed
Here’s the time plan to breed goldfish -

* You would need to plan a year ahead in the months of July or August. This is when most breeders sell their surplus fish at cheaper rates. If you skip this period than would find it hard to find a good breeding quality pair of goldfish.

* During the winter you must feed the fish and help them build enough body mass to last the winter and be ready for spawning in the early spring. By October or November, your fish would need less food and this is the time to not only clean the fish but also separate the males from the females.

Cleaning the fish: The solution you need to clean the fish is one measure of Terramycin, 80 drops of Formaldehyde and 6 drops of copper sulphate in four gallons of water. The solution should be at the right temperature and the fish should get enough oxygen to breathe. Allow the goldfish to remain in this solution for 20 minutes and then move them to a separate container of clean water while you prepare a spawning tank.

* Make sure you make the new tank a natural spawning area with bushy natural plants, artificial fibers or spawning mops and coconut fibers, all materials that can receive the spawn. Goldfish need such props for spawning.

Size of the spawning tank: You will need at least a tank that can hold 20 gallons of water. If the fish were bigger than you would need a bigger tank.

* Now that the fish are clean and the tank is clean too, do not feed the fish anything for the next two months except some amount of live food like insect larvae, worms, and brine shrimp. This preparation will help the females develop healthy and the males, milt that is needed to fertilize the eggs.

* If the winters are too cold in your area, you can consider using a heater.

* Watch the male goldfish developing breeding tubercles that look like white pimples on their gill covers and the pectoral fins.

* Watch the females become rounder body as it fills up with roe or eggs.
How do you spot the spawning moment?

* Spawning usually happens in the early morning.

* The colors of all the goldfish will look brighter then before.

* The fish would group together while swimming.

* The males will be chasing the females at random.

* Finally the active males zero in on one particular female and chase her more than before.

* The chase will intensify with the male getting aggressive and pushing against the female goldfish till she ejects her eggs.
* As the eggs are out the male will fertilize them by depositing milt over the eggs.

* The eggs will fall through the water, landing on plants. They stay in the same spot till they hatch.

* The spawning may begin again after some days of rest.

Point of note: Goldfish eat their eggs. Of the 10,000 eggs that are laid in one spawning session, hardly any will be left if the fish are not removed. So once the eggs are laid, move the parents back to another tank.
