Interesting Old Dog Tricks: For Dog Owners Looking For Fun &

The teaching and training of dog tricks while not a necessary part of a dog’s education, is an achievement that offer dog owners and his friends a great deal of amusement and adds materially to the value of a dog.

Training your dog tricks can be difficult and frustrating if you cannot achieve the results you want. However, unlike house and potty training which are vital education for any dog, I feel that the end-results is not the most significant element in trick training, to me the most important part is that both of you enjoy the training process and have fun along the way.

Listed in this article are 3 interesting dog tricks that you can teach your dog:

Dead Dog

Place a dog on his back or side or in any position you may select, threaten him with your forefinger and say “dead” or any word that you may select to associate with this trick, use both hands to help him stay in that position when you first begin training. Praise him and offer treats if he can stay in position.

With regular practice, he should be able to stay in the position in which you have placed him, it is only a question of practice when you can call to him and say “dead,” and he will lie down and stretch out in the position that you have accustomed him to taking.

Sneezing

With careful and patient training, most dogs can be taught to sneeze. This is accomplished by tickling the nose - with a feather. At first he will snap at it, and under normal circumstances, most dogs will start to sneeze; he will not like the feather very well and in course of time his imagination will foreshadow its effects and he will begin to sneeze as soon as it is pointed in close proximity to his nose. When he sneezes, use a command like “Sneeze”, to associate with this trick. As usual, praise and treat when he gets it right.

By repeating this operation at odd times the dog can be taught to sneeze very creditably when you point your finger at his nose and give him the word “Sneeze,” and finally will do so simply at command.

This trick can be fun and entertaining but not easily achievable especially with dominant dogs. If your dog get irritated and turn aggressive toward you when you tickle his nose, you should stop training immediately.

Bringing His Tail

During play, dogs frequently grasp their tails in their mouths. If you haven’t notice, if you take hold of your dog tail while playing with him, he will probably seize your hand, but if you skillfully slip his tail in his mouth he will grab it - Interesting!

These facts suggested the trick of “Bringing his tail.” It is a rather difficult feat to accomplish, but it is possible for any amateur to teach it to his dog providing the dog has a long enough tail and the trainer sufficient patience - Sorry to dog owners with short tails!

Anyway, this trick is very amusing, for when the dog has his tail in his mouth he can only advance crab-fashion or sideways, with a tendency to go around in a circle without making much advance.

The first step in teaching this trick is to praise the dog when he first gets his tail in his mouth, and after he has held it for a few moments bid him to let go and reward him.

Should he give up his hold before you order him to do so, speak sharply to him and begin all over again. When he learns to hold his tail until ordered to relinquish it the first part of the trick has been taught, and you can begin to teach him to bring it to you. To do this, step back a few feet from the dog in the direction he can most easily advance, and call him.

If he releases his hold of his tail to come to you, ignore him and replace the tail in his mouth again, but when he comes without letting go he should be rewarded gradually increase the distance you require him to carry his tail, but this task is so difficult that he should not be asked to go more than ten or twelve feet.

In beginning the trick, when you place his tail in his mouth say “Bring me your tail,” so as to accustom him to the command. In time you will not have to place his tail in his mouth, but merely hold it for him to grasp, and after still further practice he will seize it at the word without your assisting him.

Enjoy training your dog new tricks, and most importantly enjoy the process and have a great deal of fun and laughter!

Car Sickness

The ten worst excuses not to spay or neuter a pet are:

  1. Just one litter and then we’ll have Fluffy spayed.

(Studies show that virtually the entire pet overpopulation stems from the “just one litter mentality.)

  2. My dog doesn’t run loose, so he doesn’t need to be fixed.

    (Murphy’s Law says otherwise.)

  3. We always find homes for the kittens.

(And that means that an equal number of kittens at the pound will be killed.)

  4. I want the children to witness the miracle of birth.

    (Rent a video.)

  5. My dog is so cute and unique, there should be more of her.

(The shelters and pounds are full of cute and unique dogs, most with only a few days to live.)

  6. It’s not natural.

(There hasn’t been anything “natural” about dogs since we began to develop breeds thousands of years ago.)

  7. I just couldn’t look my dog in the eye if I had him castrated.

    (Watch it, you’re anthropomorphiizing.)

  8. A female dog or cat should have at least one litter for health reasons.

    (Medically, factually and ethicaly indefensible.)

  9. Neutering my dog will make him fat and lazy.

(Too much food and not enough exercise make a dog fat and lazy.)

  10. Fixing my pet will change its personality.

(The main influences on an animal’s personality are the kindness and care with which it is raised.)

Commitment, Firmness, but kindness.

New Drug Alli Said to Block Fat-soluble Vitamins

After the FDA gave their approval of the new weight loss drug Alli, it came out in 2007 and became quite profitable in the market. Alli is the first over-the-counter weight loss pill from GlaxoSmithKline. Its counterpart, the 120mg Xenical, needs a prescription from a doctor, unlike Alli that does not need any doctor’s recommendation.

Alli works by blocking the fats that come from the food we consume, then keeps it from being absorbed by the body. This is specifically made to treat the obese and overweight. Combined with a low fat diet and regular exercise, Alli can help you lose a few pounds the faster way. It is being heralded as a potential bestseller, since many people are desperate to lose weight.

However, Alli can make it harder for you to absorb essential fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K. The drug holds on to the fats and then carries the fats out of your system where they cannot be digested. Therefore, Alli users are advised to take multivitamins and mineral supplements while taking the medication. There is no risk to nutritional deficiency when taking Alli, the user must simply take various supplements to avoid such condition.

Designers to Learn How to Mitigate Workplace Risks in the Construction Industry
Wednesday April 29th 2009, 10:50 am
Filed under: Business Opps, Online Legal Resources

A one-day seminar, organised by professional associations in cooperation with the HSE, is expected to spread awareness amongst designers about the importance of taking into account health and safety considerations during the design stages of construction projects.

The seminar, which is to take place at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, is part of a designer safety awareness day programme. The HSE has taken this step after receiving a number of complaints about the unsatisfactory efforts made by designers to eradicate workplace risks.

The construction industry in the UK is the country’s largest and riskiest, employing 2.2 million workers, who face risk of injury and death on a daily basis. Designers are the first actors in this business, and the HSE believes that they are perfectly placed to reduce injuries and ill health at work through competent design work, which meets high health and safety standards. With such problems addressed at the beginning of the process, there is a lower chance that changes will have to be made at any stage after construction has commenced.

Health and Safety Awareness Officer Cheryl Eeles, speaking for the HSE, was quick to point out that good design practice is beneficial not only because of the direct benefit of reduced pain and suffering of workers, but also indirectly as it increases workplace efficiency, boosts morale, and encourages a businesslike attitude amongst workers. She was happy to announce that the cross-industry venture to make health and safety standards better, known as Working Well Together (WWT), will have completed ten years in May.

The HSE is hoping that designers can benefit from the seminar, as they will be taught about the problems faced by contractors and workers, and will also be reminded of the high safety standards they are expected to adhere to. If all goes well, construction work may soon become a lot safer.

Employers need to keep themselves up to date with health and safety developments to avoid potential legal action from employers by taking a health and safety courses such as the iosh managing safely certificate course available from the experts at Workplace Law Training.

I Hate To Say That I Told You So
Monday April 27th 2009, 7:47 am

I created the Perverted Perfection Website at http://politics.billknell.com so that people could get another view of all things political. Apart from Left, Right or somewhere in between, there is the fact that politicians have been steadily increasing their control over our lives. That control has nothing to do with any of the knee jerk issues or colorful people we love to hate on either side of the aisle in government. It’s all about CONTROL and always has been.

Despite any moves in either political direction over the past twenty years, the government has seized more control over everything you do. This is not about protecting you from terrorists, lowering or raising taxes or anything other then a power grab. Nothing illustrates this more then the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court regarding a government’s right to seize private property for public use.

It’s been a trend throughout the nation. Huge tracts of privately owned land are seized by local cities, towns and villages and turned over to big box store developers. The idea is that everyone will benefit because more tax revenue will be generated by a big store then the Johnson’s Horse Stable or Shelly Greenberg’s two bedroom home. However, what happened to the private property rights of those people? Given this decision, it would be almost foolish for anyone to buy any land unless it’s part of some preplanned and approved subdivision. In short, the government is now forcing people to live where they want them to. It’s social engineering, pure and simple.

When I first started my Website in the late 1990s, my concern was to make people aware that they were being used and manipulated by politicians with an agenda that serves their own purposes. Now the chickens have come home to roost. Law after law is being proposed before Congress that will limit your right to live life the way you want to in a free society. A good example is the PAWS act. This legislation is supposed to protect animals. The idea is to bring all dog and cat breeders of any size under the control of the federal government. It doesn’t say that, but read it carefully. If you advertise or sell your pups online, you are their target. As if it’s any surprise in a politically correct America, Rescue Groups are immune from this legislation.

There will always be a bad guy the government uses as an excuse to chip away at your Rights. Whether it’s drug dealers, terrorists, puppy mill operators or someone else, it will be YOU who will lose your Rights and the bad guys will still be there. That’s because the legislation that ends up as law doesn’t mention drug dealers, terrorists or puppy mill operators. It mentions YOU. You are the one who will be told where to live, how to travel, what to eat, what type of business you can own and which activities they feel are politically correct enough for you to be involved in.

I hate to say I told you so, but I did. I predicted that no matter which party was elected in any election, YOU would be the loser. I always say to use your vote before you lose it. That time may have already past.

How Turtles Behave
Sunday April 26th 2009, 11:36 am

Turtles may be very strange in their behavior. So it is very interesting to know how they behave while in wild or in their natural habitat.
Living habits

An unhappy turtle becomes very lazy in its conduct. It will withdraw into its shell, physically and emotionally. It will remain quietly unobtrusive for minutes or even hours.

Semi-aquatic turtles like to swim and to bask. When swimming, they look busy but synchronized. They may take a few minutes out from swimming to rest quietly on the bottom of their tank or to walk slowly along searching for prey.

Turtles often like to climb up and over a rock or log, even when they could easily walk around the obstacle.

Feeding Habits

Turtles have excellent vision and apparently an acute sense of smell as well. And this helps the turtles to make their food. Turtles are known to find their food primarily by vision and if they like to eat some vegetable, then they may use their smelling power.

North American wood turtles find their earthworm meal by “stomping.” For doing so, they raise the shell high above the ground on extended legs, then collapsing against the moist earth. The vibrations from this apparently induce earthworms to surface, and there the tortoise can easily eat them.

Nesting

It may be noted that all turtles nest on land. Females are very much sure about finding the needed amount of ground moisture and temperature when searching for a nesting site. Some of the turtle species gather together a mound of vegetation for the nesting site. Although some turtles choose to dig a body pit with the forelimbs, the nest itself is dug with the hindfoot.

After finding a proper place for nesting and making proper arrangements for the eggs to be laid, the turtle lays their eggs. They can’t guard these eggs from predators and so a very few of them actually live.

Mesothelioma a Infrequent Cancer

Filed under: Life Of Health, Medicine + Life, Politics News

Cancer of the mesothelium is a uncommon cancer of the tissues that line people’s internal organs. Nearly two thousand new cases are diagnosed every year in the whole United States. From this group, almostthree out of four of occurrences concern the sac that protects the lungs, referred to as the pleura. This is known as pleural mesothelioma. In about 10 to 20 percent of cases, mesothelioma may concern the tissue that encircles visceral organs, called the peritoneal membrane, causing what is then known as peritoneal mesothelioma.

Being introduced to asbestos is absolutely the main risk factor for this rare aliment. After exposure to asbestos, the time period to progression of the mesothelioma disease might be 2 to 4 decades. As a result of work introduction, mesothelioma is around 3 times more routine in men, than in women. Due to the amount of instances goes up with age, there are around 10 times more instances in the males over age 64 than in the males in their midlife.

Developing Cancer of the mesothelium is a weighty ailment, that, at the moment, has a incredibly poor percentage of lasting survival. However, if it is recognized early, care are then in existence that will significantly prolong the patient’s life. New therapies continue to be and are being developed through the use of clinical trials.

How To Stop Your Horse From Rearing And What To Do If He Doe
Sunday April 26th 2009, 12:50 am

There is a dangerous problem that horse owners should be very aware of. It’s when a horse stands up on his back legs. It’s called “rearing.” This problem can be quite dangerous and cause severe injuries to the rider and/or horse.

Rearing is perhaps a horse’s most effective defense against the rider. It is dangerous in that the horse can fall over backward onto its rider. Because of a horse’s enormous weight this can cripple and even kill the rider. Thus, it is good to know why, if possible, a horse rears. But even more importantly, how to stop it.

If your horse ever does rear with you on him, there isn’t much you can do. If he rears suddenly, he could lose his balance and fall or he could rear so explosively that he can throw himself back to the ground with the rider under him. If you’re on him while this is happening and you use the reins to pull on to keep from falling, you’re likely to pull the horse over.

Although it’s not one hundred percent infallible, the best way to protect yourself when a horse rears with you is to lean forward immediately and put your hands forward so you have loose reins. If you have to, you could even put your arms around his neck, let go of the reins and slide off. For my money, there aren’t any other safer ways to deal with a horse if he suddenly rears.

Why do horses rear? There are several reasons why. Here are some examples.

I’ve read where a rider was on an obedient horse while trail riding. They came upon cows and it scared the horse because the horse was not used to cows. The rider tried to get the horse to go toward the cows to get it to learn that cows are not spooky. The horse obeyed and went forward but finally became so frightened that it reared up, lost balance, and fell on its rider. The rider suffered numerous broken bones.

The rider later understood the horse felt trapped. The horse obediently went forward even though it was frightened. As it got closer, fear overpowered the horse and it had nowhere to go but up.

Some horses rear because as colts they were too young to be ridden. Another reason rearing happens is because training may confuse the horse. The horse may be asked to do too much at one time and not know what to do.

Sometimes a horse will rear if it is forced to yield to the bit. Other horses may rear if you try to get them to put out more energy than they can. On the opposite end, some horses may rear because they want to go and you don’t let them.

So how do you stop a horse from rearing?

First, let’s take a look at the anatomy of a horse while it rears. A horse cannot rear while running. A horse must stop (or be barely moving) to be able to rear. If a rider has had enough experience on a horse he can feel when the horse gets light in the front. In a way, it would be a bit like sitting in the middle of a teeter-totter where you can feel one side getting light.

So, if a horse has to stop to rear up then it makes sense to keep the horse moving so it cannot rear up. Thus, if you feel your horse getting light in the front then you move him forward and do it with meaning. Not just a patient “cluck” from your mouth. Do it like you mean it. And it’s also important he has a place to go forward - don’t have him blocked in by anything.

If your horse rears up and you weren’t ready for it then lean forward and give your horse loose reins. As soon as your horse’s feet are almost back to the ground then make your horse go forward. Let the horse know, with no doubt whatsoever, to go forward. Boot the horse “hard” into going forward. When your horse has gone forward a little ways then double him and drive him forward out of the double. Then double him the other way and drive him forward from it also. Then bring your horse to a stop.

What does it mean to “double” your horse? Essentially, you will pull his head back one way towards his hind quarters. The moment he is committed to the turn then boot him forward. This impresses upon your horses mind that you can control him.

Other so-called “schools of thought” to stop rearing are to hit a horse over the head with a two-by-four when he rears up. I’ve even read where people break beer bottles over the horse’s head. Some people use the handle end of a riding crop. Not only are these inhumane ways to stop rearing, they are rarely, if ever, effective. They don’t teach a horse anything except to fear the rider. Hitting a horse over the head when you are trying to build a trust relationship will destroy all you’ve worked for.

As is almost always the case, the best way to get a horse to do what you want is to use psychology of the horse. Get him to move and you can accomplish miracles.
