Drawstring bags are one of those sewing projects that can
transcend all purposes. You can make them to hold small objects,
like those seasonal colored glass rocks that you fill your vases
with. You can use them as gift bags to cover wine bottles, hold
small jewelry boxes, or any size gift. You can make them for
decorative items for your home or bath. Whatever your reason for
sewing a drawstring bag, you will discover that making one is
super simple. The construction is sew simple, that you can
easily modify your dimensions, fabric and string to create a
huge variety of drawstring bags.

So, decide on the size of your bag first. Are you making to hold
a wine bottle? Something small?

Then pick out your fabric. You’ll need a little more than twice
your bag’s dimensions. So, if your bag will be 12″ by 5″, then
you want fabric that is at least 24″ plus 1 1/2″ by 5″ plus 1″.

You’re also going to need some cord, ribbon, or whatever you
plan on using for a drawstring. You will need the diameter of
your bag plus at least 8″. In the example above, I am making a

Once you have your dimensions, cord and your fabric, follow
these easy step-by-step instructions below to learn how to sew a
drawstring bag… within minutes (yes minutes) !

1. Cut your fabric so that the length is twice the finished
length plus 1 1/2″.

Example: The finished width of my bag will be 12″. So I will cut
my fabric to be 24″ plus 1 1/2″ long… 25 1/2″.

2. Cut your fabric so that the width is the finished width plus
1/2″.

Example: The finished width of my bag will be 5″. So I will cut
my fabric to be 5″ plus 1/2″ wide… 5 1/2″.

3. Serge or overlock stitch the raw edges. If you don’t have an
overlock stitch, you can sew a zig-zag stitch along your raw
edges.

4. Fold the fabric in half… right sides together… wrong
sides facing out… aligning the raw side edges and the raw top
edges. The folded edge will be the bottom of your bag.

5. Press and pin if necessary.

6. On one side, sew all the way up the side edges with a 1/4″
seam. Be sure to back stitch in the beginning and end of the
stitching to lock the stitch.

7. Measure down the other raw side edge 3/4″ and mark with a pin.

8. Sew a 1/4″ to sew the other side seam… but this time stop
at the pin mark. Be sure to back stitch in the beginning and end
of the stitching to lock the stitch.

9. Fold down the top raw edge a 1/4″ and press.

10. Fold down the top edge again 1/2″ and press. The folded edge
created in step 9 should align with the mark made in step 7.

11. Starting at the mark made in step 7, stitch around the bag
close to the folded edge created in step 9. This will create the
pocket for your drawstring.

12. Turn the bag right side out and press well.

13. Slide your drawstring through the pocket. You may want to
use some wire and a safety pin to help pull the cord through the
pocket.

And your done! Pull the drawstring to gather the opening closed
and tie.

Once you have the basics down, the possibilities are endless.
You can sew sequins and beads to the fabric. So fringe around
the top edge. Glue a glittery snowflake… handstitch a design,
cut out fabric in shapes and press them to the bag with web
adhesive. Create the fabric with a crazy quilt technique or a
simple patchwork style. Use fancy fabrics like silk, velvet or
lace.

BETHESDA, MD - October 19, 2004 - As an experienced California
real estate broker, you can imagine that I can be pretty jaded
when it comes to the home buying process. While finding the
right home at the right price is of primary concern, I have
always started the process shopping for an agent willing to go
the extra mile. To that end I have a simple test I put
prospective agents and brokers through that might help you the
next time you are looking for real estate brokerage services.

To set the stage, understand that I have been thinking about
retirement now for several years and have narrowed my final
resting place to two general areas: Bethesda MD and Scottsdale
AZ. I started calling agents in the Bethesda area early one
morning and, from the outset, made it very clear to everyone I
spoke with that I had not yet committed myself to either
destination.

The first three calls generated predictable reactions. The
agents, two men and one woman, upon learning that I was a
“lookiloo” found a way to excuse themselves from the
conversation. Two tried to be delicate about it, one was abrupt.
The latter encounter left me feeling like a telemarketer.

My fourth call was taken by an inexperienced agent who,
obviously working on her broker’s orders, insisted upon getting
my social security number so she could pre-qualify me on the
spot. I ended that call myself.

My search fortunately came to an end when I talked with Gretchen
Koitz. It was obvious from the outset that she was experienced.
Instead of going for the jugular as the previous agents had
done, she spent 45 minutes conversing with me and in doing so
earned my trust and respect.

As it turns out, her willingness to spend time talking with me
is not a matter of having a lot of time on her hands. She is the
Director of New Agent Training at the Long and Foster Bethesda
Gateway Office, an office that she was proud to say had done
over a billion dollars of volume each of the last three years.
That was impressive to me because most of the firms I worked
with in California thought it was time for celebration and
extended vacation when they reached the 10,000,000 mark.

As we discussed my needs and expectations, I discovered a great
deal about Gretchen. She is confident, not threatened by
questions related to her professional credentials. She’s
thoroughly familiar with the mechanics of the home buying
process, and knows the Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Kensington
market like the back of her hand.

I also discovered that she is a proud mother. During our
conversation we shared stories about our grown kids. I have two
daughters, one a graduate of USC, the other a graduate of Loyola
Marymount in LA. Kevin, her oldest son, graduated a couple of
years ago from Stanford with a degree in marketing and new media
communications which, as it turns out, is being put to good use
because he has now joined the family business.

And his addition didn’t come any time too soon. Three years ago
Gretchen had to start referring clients to other brokers in the
area, because she couldn’t handle the demand. Now that Kevin is
her partner, they are able to handle the increased volume
without outside help.

With a degree in marketing and new media communications, Kevin
is a welcome addition because he spends most of his time
cultivating new marketing strategies. “Marketing is so much more
than it used to be,” Gretchen said. “You know, putting a sign in
the ground and a listing in the computer. Even in the hottest
sellers’ markets, there is always a way to make the property
more visible and that exposure brings more offers to the table.
Kevin does that for us.”

What has evolved is a multi-generational, multi-disciplinary
approach to both sales and relationships. Kevin, using advanced
technologies, has been able to target market, placing properties
in locations to be seen by the right buyers. He has also
increased the “team’s” online presence, which is also incredibly
helpful to sellers and buyers.

As for me, I have yet to decide whether I’m going to move back
East or to Scottsdale, but one thing is for sure. If I do move
to the Bethesda area, I will be counting on Gretchen and her son
to handle the details. I put a premium on business service
providers who put my interests ahead of their own.

“Eeewww, cow poop!” squealed my son, inciting instantaneous
giggles from his little sisters at his remark.

At least that was better than the bored whining I’d heard for
the last twenty-five miles. After about five more miles of poop
talk, things reverted back to whining, again. I really needed to
come up with something fast, other than the five different
versions of road sign bingo that we played the first fifty
miles, or I was going to go insane.

“Hey!” I exclaimed, interrupting a “Mom, she’s looking at me”
and a “Don’t touch me!” volley. Sort of getting their attention,
I pressed on. “What would the world be like if turtles could
fly?” I casually remarked. That got their attention and threw
them into hysterics. Okay, I thought, this could actually work.
After the laughter died down, I threw in, “and what would the
world be like if birds flew backwards?” Another burst of
laughter followed that statement.

Then my son got into the swing of things and said, “What would
the world be like if ev’rybody’s butt danced when they walked?”
We all have the sillies and the giggles now.

My oldest daughter threw in, “what would the world be like if
worms floated in the air?” Then my three-year-old chirps, “what
the world be like if’n worms float’d in a air?” Well, she
is only three, mimicking is what she does best. We all
still giggle and there is magic in the air.

Even though this “exercise in funility” only lasted about
thirty-four and a half minutes, its mood carried us on to our
destination.

So, if you are out of ideas and almost out of your mind, try it
on for size. You may find that it not only wipes out some of
that “whine time” it invites happiness and silliness to plop
down and buckle up in your car, plane, train, bus, bike,
sneakers…
