Preparing Your Body For Golf While You Travel
We all know the temptations of traveling… grabbing a slice of pizza while running to your gate at the airport, an elaborate steak dinner with a client, and being so tired at day’s end that all you want to do is fall into bed. Traveling can often create havoc on regular exercise and golf conditioning. Fitness and good nutrition while on the road can help keep you on top of your game. With a bit of planning and creative strategy you can help keep your body ready to hit the golf course.
First thoughts about travel, exercise and maintaining good nutrition can be negative for many. Some will think, I don’t have the equipment I usually have, my meals will all be eating out or fast food. Instead of giving up on preparing your body for golf, consider ways to maintain a good portion of your normal fitness and health routine. You’ll be surprised at just how much you can accomplish. Here’s a few tips to help:
• As you plan your trip be sure to define your fitness goals while you travel. Keep them specific, measurable, realistic and timely. Consider the constraints you’ll have by your travel schedule and logistics.
• When booking your flights and hotel call ahead or check the internet to find details about exercise facilities. If no facility is available, plan alternate activities like an in-room workout.
• As you pack be sure to include workout gear as space allows.
• If your travel involves time-based appointment, schedule appointment with yourself for your workout. Treat this appointment just as you would any other meeting.
You’ll be surprised at just how much you can accomplish even in your hotel room. Stretches, and some exercises are easily performed as no equipment is necessary. With fitness awareness soaring, many hotels have first-rate fitness centers with a full variety of equipment and their own fitness staff. For most travelers, the best way to fit exercise into their day is by simply setting the alarm a bit earlier to accommodate time for conditioning. This helps to leave the remainder of the day free for your other scheduled activities.
While exercising regularly is important for your health and golf game, so is how you eat. It is so easy to get off course when you are not at home. Try to pack snacks for the trip and an extra water bottle. Travel can place stress on the body and zap you of your energy. Snack and meal replacement bars are handy for travelers with hectic schedules. While bars are no substitute for real food (i.e., fresh vegetables, fruit, and protein), they’re a certainly a step in the right direction from burgers and fries. As you choose your bars read the label to check calorie, fat, carbohydrate and protein content. All bars are not equal.
With a little planning and determination, continued conditioning during your travel can keep your body ready for the golf course.

Power Golf The Easy Way
Power golf is a game very few golfers can play. What I mean by that is…power golf takes a certain level of golf specific strength and flexibility. There are requirements that have to be in place to maximize your power and golf driving distance.
It’s not as easy as getting the ‘latest-greatest’ driver at $500. It’s not buying Titleist ProV1’s at $45 a case. It’s not even taking more lessons (although swing mechanics are very important).
The answer is improved strength and flexibility from a rotational standpoint…in your core…to play a power golf game.
The golf swing is a turn (rotate back) and a turn (rotate through). If there are limitations that don’t allow you to rotate back fully and store that torque (energy), then you will never play a power golf game. I hate to sound harsh, but it’s the truth…plain-and-simple.
Do you currently feel like you can make a full backswing with max torque in your core area? I mean a 90+ degree shoulder turn with nothing more than a 45 degree hip turn…and with both heels on the ground?
If you can’t…do you think hitting more balls is the answer? Or taking more lessons? I hope not! It’s about getting off the course and doing some simple golf exercises and stretches that won’t even take 20 minutes to do…a couple times a week.
No gym! No fancy equipment! Just simple exercises done in your home with minimal equipment. You don’t have to get overwhelmed thinking it’s a gut-busting, sweaty workout.
Although…when you get a taste of what being ‘fit’ feels like…it’s almost addicting. It’s like the ‘runners high’. You start looking a little better. Having more energy. Experiencing less aches and pains. And best of all! You’re killing the ball long and straight!
Every exercise you do to create a power golf game should be focused on core rotational exercises. It’s easy! Get in your golf posture and grab a single dumbbell or bag of sugar. Something that weighs about 5 pounds. Now make partial swings…staying in your posture for 20-30 swings. There’s one simple and easy-to-implement rotational exercise.
I’ll bet you can handle that one.
How bad do you want to play “power golf?” How bad do you want to be the ‘last golfer’ to hit your second shot into the green? How bad do you want all your golfing buddies to be in the proshop after the round talking about one of your LONG drives?
Start implementing exercises like the above example and you’re one step closer to playing power golf!

Golf Gadgets: For The Golfers Who Have Everything
Golf gadgets: Who wants them? Who needs them? These little
devices come in as many shapes, sizes, and forms as there are
stars in the universe. Unlike short-game training devices or
swing aids they do not work directly on teaching you the proper
techniques of the golf swing. However they are indeed incredibly
creative in unexpected and very imaginative ways. They are made
to make the crazy game of golf more fun, a lot less strenuous
and simply easier to play.
It is for this reason that the avid golfer in the family can no
longer go through any Christmas without receiving one accessory
either in their stocking or under the tree. These golf gadgets
have become somewhat of a phenomenon and even a tradition in
some house holds be it good or bad.
For the golfer who is receiving these gifts it becomes a sheer
reminder of how much they need to work on their games. To some
it can even become and embarrassment to think that these little
golf accessories can help improve their games. For others they
give them a great little giggle when they see what some crazy
fool has come with to help their golf swing.
Do we as golfers really need them? Some would say yes that these
little golf gadgets are essential to improving their performance
on the course. These golf addicts will go to every extreme and
buy every little gadget out there because they feel that it will
help. On the other hand, most of us know that there is no cure
other than straight hard practice that nobody really wants to do
let alone has time for.
Unfortunately most of the golf gadgets on the market are not
perfect and have some sort of a defect or an annoying flaw. That
is why most of them don’t make it into widespread circulation
and use. Having said that, there are a small number of good
little gadgets out there that actually work!
These items include the suction cup on the grip of your putter
that makes it easier to pickup your ball form the hole without
bending over. Another good one that is almost essential to every
player is the divot repair tool that can come in many shapes and
styles. You also have the Brush-T that is said to make contact
with the ball less inhibiting by making the tee flexible. One
other must have for the average golfer is the groove cleaner to
help remove the dirt from your clubs so you can hit a crisper
shot. The most important thing to remember about these
items is that they are mainly for fun. They’re great to have and
enjoy every time you play golf. There are so many golf gadgets
out there in the market you just have to pick the ones you think
are cool and simply try them!
10 Steps to Safe Gymnastics
Build Your Strength First
It is much safer and much easier to make build sufficient
strength first to perform the skills you are trying to learn. If
you are not strong enough, you will never be able to do many
gymnastics skills no matter how many times you try. Building
strength also makes you safer in potentially dangerous fall
situations.
Pay Attention
You need to be aware of what is going on around you in the gym
if there are other gymnasts, especially bigger ones, around. You
need to be aware and pay attention to everything and everyone
around you who might crash into you or land on you. You also
need to pay careful attention to your coach so you understand
exactly what they expect of you to learn efficiently and keep
yourself safe.
Check Equipment First
Make sure all equipment is set and sturdy before you begin to
perform any skills on it. Handles and cables need to be tight
enough so the equipment is safe for you to be on. Don’t assume
the equipment is correctly set and tight. Check it an make sure
first.
Know Fall Zones
Don’t sit or stand in potential landing or fall zones. Too often
gymnasts waiting for their turn do not stay enough out of the
way of other gymnasts who need adequate room to dismount or a
place to fall.
Don’t Do Gymnastics By Yourself
Just like swimming and other physical activities where there is
even the remotest chance of injury, gymnasts should only work
out when there is at least one other person around. This means
on those home trampolines, too.
Don’t Spot Other Gymnasts
Spotting is an art and requires the knowledge, strength and
experience of a gymnastics professional. Any error in judgement
on your or their part could lead to you being involved and
responsible for their potentially serious injury.
Only Let Professional Coaches Spot You
By the same token, you should only let qualified gymnastics
professionals spot you on skills you cannot do and need help
with. You risk potentially serious injury by being spotted or
coached by someone who is not qualified, knowledgeable,
experienced or strong enough.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for a Spot
Ask for a spot if you are doing tricks if you need or want it.
You are the one most likely to know and remember if you need a
spot or not and it will be too late if you attempt a skill you
are not sure of and fall. Spotting can protect you and build
your confidence in doing the skill until you are ready to do it
on your own safely. Don’t tell a coach that you can do skills if
you are not 100% sure you can do them safely.
Stop, Look And Listen
Just like crossing a street, when you approach an equipment
area, the floor exercise mat, tumbling strips or other mats and
pieces of equipment, you need to stop and look both ways before
you cross or enter to make sure you are not in the way or going
to get landed on.
Watch Where You are Going
Watch where you are walking. Nothing is more embarrassing and
sometimes painful and dangerous than falling over mats, into
pits, over bar cables, etc. There are lots of obstacles in every
gym like different heights and softness levels of mats.
Spring Black Bear Hunt
I just got back from my first black bear hunt in Canada. It was
a hunting trip that will stay with me for the rest for my
life. This trip wasthe most intense, and unnerving experiences
I have ever had. I arrived at camp in Brunswick Canada on a
Sunday night and was in the tree stand earlythe next
morning. My opentree stand was only 7 feet off the ground, and
the bears bait can only 14 yards away. This is what we call
“nerve hunting” up close and personal! I saw no bears on the
firstand second day of hunting this zone. I was completely
alone about 10 miles from camp in the deep woods. But my wait
was worth it. On the 3rd day,in the early evening at about 4:30
PM, a black bear came out of no were silentlyfrom my right hand
side. The bear started to eat some of the bait for what seemed
like 5 minuets. I thought the bear looked a little small and
wanted tobag a bigger one so I decided to let it go. After
about 10 minuets of watching the bear eat, it stopped, got up on
its hinder legs and started to sniff around. Then the bear
started to walk right towards me! Next thing I know, the bear
was sittingdirectly underneath me!At this point I was
thinking about all the bear hunting magazines and books I read
and remembered that it is not unusual for bears to clime into
tree stands with hunters. I started to get nervous. I did not
know if the bear knew I was their or not. I nervously watched
the bear sitting and sniffing right underneath me for about 5
minuets, then out of no were it ran off. I knew what that meant,
a bigger bear was on the way. Sure enough about 2 minuets
latter, the biggest bear I have EVER seen came out of the same
direction the bear started to eat the bait, I shouldered my
Ruger 300 Win Mag and BLAM! The bear went right down. Shortly
after I shot him, he let out a loadroar that made the hair on
the back of my neck stand up! The bear weighed in at 600 lbs,
the largest taken in that zone in 5 years!

Steve Merril’s College Fullcourt Report (Feb.21)
The NCAA Tournament is fast approaching and the next three weeks
the Field of 64 will begin to take form. Tonight’s three
national TV games all feature “bubble teams” as Michigan,
Xavier, Alabama, and Arkansas are all battling for those final
postseason spots with critical conference games tonight.
Below is a look at each game on ESPN and ESPN-2 for Tuesday.
ILLINOIS (-1 , 135) at MICHIGAN (ESPN)
Illinois was the national runner-up last season and despite
losing two of their best players, the Illini are once again a
Top 10 team and stand 22-4 SU on the season. This is a tough
spot for Illinois as they must travel and play their second game
in three days, following a big home win over Indiana on national
TV Sunday afternoon.
Illinois won the first meeting versus Michigan, 79-74 on January
14th, but Michigan got the pointspread cover as a 10 -point
road underdog. Michigan outshot Illinois 46-42 percent overall
and 46-39 percent from three-point range.
Michigan is just 1-4 SU/ATS over their past five games, but
three of those four recent losses were on the road. The
Wolverines have been strong at home this season, going 12-2 SU.
Michigan is battling numerous injuries and three key players
Chris Hunter, Jerret Smith and Lester Abram are all listed as
questionable tonight.
Hunter is second on the team in blocks (21) and fifth in scoring
(7.0 ppg). Smith is third on the team in assists (41) this
season and Abram is the team’s fourth leading scorer (11.5 ppg).
XAVIER -1 at DAYTON (espn2)
Xavier enters this game off a three-game home stand in which
they went 2-1 SU, but just 1-2 ATS. The Musketeers lost the
first game versus LaSalle, 79-70, as an 11 -point favorite, but
then bounced backed with easy wins over Fordham, 84-64, and
Duquesne 91-70. Xavier easily covered as a 10 -point favorite
versus Fordham, but failed to cover an inflated 22 -point line
versus Duquesne.
Dayton has one of the most extreme home/road dichotomies in the
nation this season as the Flyers stand 11-4 SU at home, but just
1-10 SU away. Dayton stands just 4-8 SU in conference play this
season, but they have beaten each of their past four Atlantic-10
home opponents.
Both teams are solid defensively as Xavier is allowing just 62.4
points per game and 39.4 percent from the field (versus
opponents that average 66.3 ppg and 43.1 percent overall) and
Dayton is permitting just 61.0 points and 40.0 percent (versus
opponents that average 67.0 ppg and 42.9 percent overall).
Xavier won the first meeting this season, 60-55, but failed to
cover as a 12-point home favorite on January 28th. The
Musketeers led 29-23 at halftime and outshot the Flyers 41-35
percent from the field. The difference in the game was a 21-8
free throw advantage (attempts) for Xavier.
ALABAMA at ARKANSAS (-7 , 137) (ESPN)
A battle between two “bubble teams” in the SEC tonight as both
squads are on the fringe of making the NCAA Tournament. Alabama
is currently ranked 38th in the RPI, while Arkansas is ranked
57th. The biggest difference has been Alabama’s stronger
schedule as the Crimson Tide has faced the fifth toughest slate
of opponents, while Arkansas has only faced the 73rd toughest
schedule. Alabama is also 3-4 SU versus top-50 opponents and 8-8
SU versus top-100 clubs, while Arkansas is 3-6 SU versus top-50
teams and just 5-6 SU versus top-100 foes.
Alabama underachieved during November and December and have
actually played better basketball since losing their leading
scorer, Chuck Davis (15.4 ppg) to a knee injury in early
January. Since their loss on January 7th in Davis’ final game,
the Crimson Tide have gone an excellent 8-3 SU and 6-3-2 ATS.
Arkansas lost at Alabama, 78-75 in overtime, as a 1 -point
underdog on January 18th, despite outshooting the Crimson Tide
42-40 percent from the field. Arkansas is just 3-7 SU on the
road this season, but a much stronger 14-1 SU at home, including
an 85-81 win over Florida on Saturday.
